Extra-Inning Win Gives Chargers Split at No. 20 Dyersburg St.

DYERSBURG, Tenn.

Noah Hoepfner (East Moline, Ill./United Township) delivered the go-ahead double in extra innings to help the Carl Sandburg College baseball earn a split at nationally ranked Dyersburg State on Tuesday as the Chargers continued their spring break trip.

The Chargers (4-6) were shut out 4-0 in Game 1 but bounced back to win Game 2 6-1 in eight innings over the Eagles (15-7), the 20th-ranked team in NJCAA Division I.

Key Moment
Dyersburg State used three hits and a Chargers error in the third to plate three runs for a 4-0 lead. The Chargers were held to just one hit in the contest, a leadoff single in the fifth from Caileb Johnson (Brimfield, Ill./Brimfield).

Sandburg Standout
Freshman Cam Scott (Mapleton, Ill./Illini Bluffs) struck out seven over six innings while allowing six hits and a walk. Only one of the four runs he allowed was earned.

Key Moment
Tied 1-1 in extras, the Chargers erupted for a five-run eighth inning as their first six batters reached base. Austin Collinson (Normal, Ill./Normal West) drew a leadoff walk and scored on Hoepfner’s double to left. Johnson followed with a single for a 3-1 lead. A walk and hit batsman loaded the bases for Sam Scott (Deer Creek, Ill./Deer Creek-Mackinaw), who plated two with a base hit to center. A two-out error brought Sam Scott home for a 6-1 Sandburg lead.

Sandburg Standout
Collinson pitched the final six innings in relief to earn the victory. He struck out three and gave up four hits and two walks. His only blemish was a leadoff homer in the sixth that tied the game. Sixty of his 94 pitches went for strikes.
